How-To: Paris in Las Vegas – Comparison between HDR, DRI & fake HDR

The Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas
It is time for a new shot from my Las Vegas tour. I think it is really crazy to see that in Las Vegas they started to build “complete” cities side by side on the strip over the last years. When you stand in front of the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas it is really huge and very impressive. But there is more and I plan to show you more during the next weeks.

I also used the picture above to compare again different techniques in the context of HDR: 3Ex HDR, 1Ex HDR, DRI

My HDR approach you can see here. Usually, I do three exposure with +- 2EV. Sometimes, when I don’t have three exposures I use one raw file directly in photomatix (I personally didn’t get so good experience with manually producing three “fake” exposures of a raw file. see here). DRI is an approach, where you don’t need an additional plug-in and that generates more “realistic” results. See my approach here.

Here you see my three initial exposures:
The Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas (+2EV)
The Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas (normal)
The Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas (-2EV normal)
Here my DRI. Especially in blown outs highlights it improves the picture nicely.

Here my 1Ex HDR: With the HDR process more details especially in the clouds can be generated. Big advantage is also that you don’t have to deal with ghosting.

Here the 3Ex HDR: The sky getting richer and also the Paris Hotel in the background is more detailed. My preferred choice.

By the way, the result above is a blend between 3Ex HDR and DRI. So, you can of course combine the strength of all versions.

Hope you like it and can use this comparison. Any own experience with this different techniques?
